Busy Times in Second grade!

Field Day 2012

Recess Snack

We have been very busy this week!  Here are a few of the best things that happened:

We switched for science this week.  From Mrs. Rowan we learned how plants grow from bulbs.  With Mrs. Kath we learned about how potato plants grow.  We get to see a potato plant too!  Ms. Olson taught us how bread comes from wheat.

We did a quilt project in math.

We had Field Day with Mr. DePrez. We played games like Splash Tag, Water relays and Suit Coat relays.  We got popsicles for a snack.

We finished out poems and wrote three times in Special Times in Second Grade.  We did our writing assessment that will be passed on to our third grade teachers.

We went to Gibbs Farm !
At Gibbs Farm we:
- made homemade ice cream
- made corn husk dolls
- J. wore the Dunce Cap in the old school
- visited the sod house and went inside
- saw the new house that Jane and Heman built
- visited the school house
Once we were back at school we ate the ice cream after recess.  It was delicious!

Marvelous Massive Majestic Moths !

Moth 1
We have been very busy learning and having fun.  This week, I. in our class brought in some giant moths to share.  They started in their cocoon but he told us they would soon hatch.  He told us they were very big and by the looks of the cocoons we could tell they would be huge.

Friday morning, the first one hatched and we let it go just after we got to school.

Moth 2
Just before we went to lunch, we noticed the second one had hatched!  We let it go and watched it for a little while.
This is where they lived.  It was a pretty space small and we really did not have to do anything but wait for them to hatch.
Acrostic poems by A.M. and M.L.
Haiku poems by A.M. and I.S.

Acrostic poem by E.L.
We have been learning about Haiku and Acrostic poems.  Some students in our class wrote about the moths.

Brassica plants and more!

April 27th
We planted our grass seeds.  We sprinkled one or two handfuls of seeds on top of the soil and we stirred it around with a fork.  We were careful not to plant the seeds too deep.

April 30th - Our grass is growing!

Here is a gladiola bulb.  A bulb is one way to start a plant.
May 2nd -   Our Brassica seeds continue to grow.  We observed that they are getting a lot taller.  We have had to raise the light many times.  Some plants have buds and some even have flowers.
May 2nd - We learned about the parts of a plant.  Can you find the parts of a plant?

Today we learned that another way to start a plant is from another plant.  We watched a video about how seeds travel.  Our classroom is FULL of plants...and books...and students!
