Special Science

Yesterday and today we had some special science learning with other Second grade teachers.

Yesterday, we went with Ms. Gilbertson to learn more about bulbs.  We talked and watched a video about bulbs.  Here are some highlights of what we learned:
1.  Bulbs are like other flowers, they need water and sun to grow.
2.  Bulbs can be flowers or onions or garlic.
3.  Some can be left in the ground in winter.
4.  When you plant them, pay close attention to where the pointy end is, it usually needs to be pointed up.

Today we went to learn about the plant life cycle with Miss Olson.  Here is a sample of what we made.  Ask your child about what he/she remembers.

Concert Pictures

I tried to capture each student as before the day or night concert.  What an amazing experience!  Both performances were so enthusiastic and a joy to watch.  They are already talking about performing again next year!

Enjoy!

Plant life in Room 109

We sure have a lot of plants growing in our room!  For the most part they are all doing very well.

The Brassica all grew and are proceeding through the life cycle of a plant.  Many of them are budding already.

We mowed our grass for the first time today.  It really needed it.  Now we will watch it grow again.

Our tomato plant is also doing well.

The basil has come in, but the chive and rosemary has not grown.  I think we will have to replant a few seeds.

Three on Thursday

Here are three things from our day:

1.  More Pictures from Como Field Trip are below.

Plant Class!

Making Bath Salts

Playing the Plant Game!

Exploring the Tropical Experience.

Checking out the polar bear.

2.  Today we did some special Literacy Switching with Miss Olson.  Each teacher read a plant themed book and had a special activity.  Ask your child about what he/she did.

3.  In Library today we learned about using the Fiction section.  This is where most of the chapter books are in the library.  We learned about the address of books in this section and practiced finding a book.  It was a bit hard, but everyone did it with a partner!

Como Field Trip

Here are a few pictures from our trip to Como Zoo and Conservatory!  It was a wonderful trip with lots of learning and energy!  Thank you to the parents who shared these photos.  As I get more I will post them.

First we went to the "Plants that Care" class.  We talked about plants and how we use them.  We made bath salts and played a game where we learned about the plants we use.  As a part of the class we did a scavenger hunt through the North Garden.  Ask your child what he/she remembers from the hunt.

We had time to look through the rest of the conservatory and the zoo.   We were very glad it was a nice day!  Thank you to all the parents who were able to come and help.

Cause and Effect

We have been reading circle stories to learn about identifying cause and effect.  Today we looked at a few books from the If You Give a      a         series.  They are quite funny and good examples of a circle story.  Ask your child about these books.

We also worked on identifying cause and effect in these books.  Next we will write our own version of a circle story.

Star of the North

Today in Library we got to vote for the Star of the North Picture Book Award!  This is a special award given to picture books by Minnesota students, like from all over the state!  Children are the ones who get to pick the winner!

Before we voted we looked through the books one last time mostly to refresh our memories.  We have read all the books in Library this year.  The nominees are 10 really good picture books about many different topics.

Next we got to vote.  One at a time we told either Ms. Z or Mrs. Anderson our selection.  It was lots of fun!  In our class, many kids voted for Emmanuel's Dream.   We will see which book is the overall winner!
