Today we . . .

Today was another great day!  We continued working on our animal research project. Today we used Kidpix to draw our animal in its habitat. It was harder than we thought it would be but a good experience.

We also finished our Rural, Urban and Suburban unit. Here is a picture of a learning tool we made.

Our New Favorite Book

We have started a new read aloud book, The World According to Humphrey by Betty Birney.  It is a story about a classroom told from the perspective of the class pet, Humphrey the hamster.   It is hilarious and really makes us laugh and giggle and at the same time serious and causes us to think about life through another person's eyes.  There are many more books in this series, which we are all excited about.  We LOVE Humphrey!

Research

Today we started our animal research project.  We are very excited about it!  In the library we used the site Pebble Go! to gather facts about our animals.  We are looking for information about their body, diet, habitat, life cycle and if the are predators or prey.  It was lots of fun to work with a partner on this project.  Next we will use books to gather more information.

This afternoon we went to the Third Grade Concert.  It was interesting to see the kids play instruments and dance.  This means we are next to perform a concert.  We are excited and nervous at the same time!

Jump Rope for Heart and Rural Communities

Last week we participated in Jump Rope for Heart.  It was an opportunity to raise awareness of heart disease as well as get some exercise.  Here is what a few students wrote in their Special Times in Second Grade.

Today we continued learning about rural communities.  Here are a few things the students said about rural communities.
Rural Communities are/have:
- not very many houses
- open spaces
- farms
- lots of green space
- few roads
-fewer choices for things (i.e. shopping, activities)

We illustrated note cards to represent a rural setting.

Heart Animal Day !

This afternoon we had a special art project.  First, we read the book My Heart is Like a Zoo by Michael Hall.  We talked about how our heart can be full of various emotions from angry to sad, calm or happy. The animals in the book are all made with hearts.

Next, we picked an animal to make using hearts.  Then we got busy making our own animals.  It was a bit hard at first, but we helped each other and worked hard.

Here are a few finished projects.  They all turned out very cute!

Today we . . .

We finished our President's Day writing.  We researched with Ms. Z in the library and practiced writing a complete paragraph.

We used the iPads for practicing comparing fractions.  It was lots of fun to use this tool for learning.
