Owls in Room 109

Today we started researching and learning about owls.  We learned a little bit about them, ask your child what he/she remembers.   (They have talons, fluffy feathers that make them light so they can fly, they can turn their heads around because they can't turn their eyes and they have sharp beaks.)  We will continue learning about owls this week.

We made some of our very own owls.  It was a step by step process.  

Tear the brown paper and glue it down so it looks like feathers.

Cut eyes, a beak and feet.  Oh, cut a moon too!

Glue all these things down and a branch.

It was a great way to spend the afternoon!  Everyone did a great job!

Friday!

Today was a successful math lesson, much better than yesterday!  Everyone did a great job working hard to learn about regrouping ones to make a ten.  

Today we also wrote our entry in our Symbol Landmark books.  We wrote about The Golden Gate Bridge.  Ask your child what he/she remembers about our research.

Learning Today

Well, this was from yesterday but it is still interesting.

We went and learned about clouds from Miss Olson.  We made these Cloud books.  We still need to finish them.  Look for them to come home next week.

Today we did some research with Ms. Z in the library.  We learned about The Golden Gate Bridge.  We learned about citing our work and writing notes in our own words, not copying.  Everyone did a great job taking notes and working together.

Today's math was quite something!  It was a new way to add two digit numbers.  We worked and worked on it.  The idea is to break one of the addends into two parts and one of those parts will be used to make a ten with the other addend.  I gave students the option of taking home the homework.   We will be working on it again tomorrow.

Two ways to add!

Today for Science we got to learn about how air can be used to move things.  We  did balloon rockets with Ms. Kath.  Ask your child about this experiment!

Parachutes!

Today we experimented with air by building parachutes and launching them!

We had to follow step by step directions for how to build the parachutes.  We did three or four steps at a time and worked together.

The second part of the directions worked better if we helped each other.  It took more than two hands.

Then, we got to launch them!  That was the best part!  They all worked well and none of them became too tangled or ripped.  

Asking Questions and Buddy Time

Today we wrapped up our focus on another Good Reader strategy - Asking Questions as you read to check understanding be engaged in your reading.  We read a book called Charlie Anderson.  It is about a cat who had two homes however the owners do not know about each other.  See if your child can retell the story to you.

This afternoon we had time with our 5th grade buddies!  It was a beautiful day to be outside.  The buddy pairs played together and had a great time.  The 5th grade students did a nice job of staying engaged with their buddy, playing with them and suggesting activities to do together.
