We went to the Library and . . .
We listened to Duck! Rabbit! by Amy Krouse Rosenthal. It is about a drawing that looks like a duck and a rabbit depending on how you look at it. This book used speech stems to tell the story. The two people telling the story disagreed about whether the character was a duck or a rabbit. In the end they compromised and looked at the drawing from the perspective of the other person. We liked this story because the illustrator changed the surroundings of the drawing to try and convince us that it was a duck or a rabbit.

Field Trip to City Hall
Today we went to the Roseville City Hall. It was a wonderful field trip! We met a police officer and a firefighter. We even got to meet the mayor of Roseville!
We learned:
- police officers have a classroom just like we do.
- firefighters wear a lot of gear when fighting fires.
- fire trucks cost a lot of money.
- the city council helps the mayor make decisions.
- the mayor is 44 years old. : )
Thanks to A.'s mom for going with us and taking pictures. Thank you also to the people who work at City Hall for helping us have such a wonderful experience.
Here are a few entries in our Special Times
in Second Grade about our trip.

Serious about series!
Today we went to the library and Ms. Zbacnik introduced us to some popular series books she thought we might enjoy.
Here are the three she told us about:
Ready Freddy
Amelia Bedelia
Judy Moody
They all looked and sounded really good and we were very excited to start reading!

The Recess Queen
I asked Michael Stanefski, school social worker, to describe his recent visit to our classroom.
Jeanne Connelly, Jenie Cirilli-Raether and I visited every classroom in the building to talk about bullying. Our goal was to create a common definition of what bullying is (and what it is not), identify different ways bullying can happen, determine strategies for how to address bullying name people students can go to for help. To help us have that conversation we read the book The Recess Queen by Alexis O'Neill and Laura Huliska-Beith.
Our definition consists of three elements; bullying includes hurtful words or actions, is intentional, and happens more than once. The different types of bullying we discussed were physical, verbal and relational. Students were very engaged in the presentation and excited to identify people they could go to for help.
Thanks to Michael, Jeanne and Jenie for their visit. It was a wonderful book and discussion!
