Shared Reading

Today we read with a partner for the first time!  We talked about and H. and I modeled what good partner reading should look and sound like.  Ask your child if he/she can tell you about how to partner read.

We have been reading Asha in the Attic in Literacy this week.   It is about a young girl and her Grandpa.  We practiced making connections to the story.  For example, thinking of a time you were scared will help you understand how Asha feels when she gets trapped in the attic.  Ask your child to tell you about the story.

Friday

Today we had our first assembly of the year!  We were all very excited!  First, we did an All School Shakedown.  Ask your child to tell you about it.

We had a special visitor - BLAZE!  It was great to see him again.  He helped us review Bengal Pride expectations.

Mrs. Brink and Mr. DePrez hosted a game show to help us review expectations.  We helped the contestants decide if a situation was an example of Responsibility, Respect or Safety.  Ask your child who won the game!

This afternoon we did math and learned about adding three numbers.  The lesson and practice went pretty well.  Ask your child if he/she can tell you show you how to add 4+6+5  or  7+4+7.

At the very end of the day we did our first entry in our Symbol Book.  Yesterday we learned about the Flag of the United States.  We read some books and watched Pebble Go to learn about the flag.  We wrote a four sentence paragraph about it.  Ask your child about some important facts about the flag.

Library Books

Today we went to the Library and got to check out books!  We each checked out one and if we can bring it back, in good shape and on time, we will be able to check out two next week.

Ms. Zbacnik went over some of the expectations for how we care for library books.  Please ask your child about where they will keep his/her books, how they will treat them and what they should do if something happens to his/her books like food is spilled or a page is torn.  We all love to read books at Brimhall and we can all do our part to help take care of the books we have each week.

Read to Self and My Math

Today we did many new things!

One new thing we did was to learn about Read to Self time.  We learned about our job and the teacher's job during this time.  We talked about how we look and sound during Read to Self.  We practiced reading for 5 minutes without a break or talking.  It was fun!

This afternoon we started our new math program My Math.  It was very interesting to use our new books and the smartboard!  We have homework for the first time!

We also started spelling.  Here is a picture of the listfor this week AND next week.

Special Times

Today we started our very own book!  Each 2nd grader is writing a book called Special Times in Second Grade.  We will write a new entry each time we do something special.  We will write about field trips, assemblies, parties etc.  Today, we wrote about our first day or first week.  My hope it that this will be a keepsake for students.  It will showcase their writing and how much is grows throughout the year.

Thinking about what to write.

First entry!

We also worked on our Me mobiles!  We will put these in the hall by our coat hooks.

What a fun week in Second grade!  We are all getting along well and having fun learning and playing!  See you next week!

Today we ...

Today we  . . .

1.  Visited the Lunchroom to learn about the Brimhall Expectations!  We heard from our teachers, Mrs. Zbacnik and Mrs. Bidne about how to behave in the Lunchroom.  Ask your child if they can tell you a few of the expectations.
When we came back, we read a few books and talked about what the lunchroom should look like, feel like and sound like.

2.  We visited the Library!  We met Ms. Zbacnik and learned about showing Bengal Pride in the Library!  We were so busy learning and talking that she forgot to read us a story!

3.  We explored our new math books!  This year, we are starting a new math program.  Today we looked through our new books and used some of the math tools.

4.  We had our first birthdays of the year!  These two have the exact same birthday!  Today is their golden birthday too!  What a special day!

Happy Birthday!

First Day

Today was our First Day of Second Grade!  It was a busy day of learning about school and our new classmates.  We spent the morning learning about routines and procedures in Second grade.  We took a tour of the school and read some good books.

This afternoon we read a favorite book Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes.  See if your child can tell you what this book is about.  After reading it we learned about each other and our names.  We created a tally chart and graph  comparing the length of our names.  We were surprised by our results!  Many students in our classroom have a name that is 7 letters long and just a few students have names with 3 letters.

It was a great first day!  I am looking forward to a wonderful year!
