Mo O'Hara visits Brimhall

Today we had the opportunity to hear author Mo O'Hara speak at Brimhall.  She is the author of My Big Fat Zombie Goldfish and other books in the series.  She explained how she decided to become an author.  Most people think an author is the person who writes the words in books and other pieces of text, which is correct and yet she liked the second definition better - the creator of ideas.  She told us that we are and can be authors by creating and writing down ideas.

She told us about how she got the idea to write her series about a zombie goldfish.  Ask your child about how she got her idea.  She also invited audience members up to play the part of some of the book characters and have a zombie goldfish staring contest.  

It was a wonderful assembly!  She is a great author and speaker!  We even got to give her high fives as we left.

Extreme Weather Research Part 2

Today, Ms. Z came to our classroom to help us do our research on extreme weather!  Today, we used books to gather facts.  We worked with a partner to gather one or two more facts in our various topic areas.  She taught us about reading the whole book, including the pictures and captions as we gather facts and information.  We finished the research after lunch.

Up next we will write our weather reports and create our weather people!  Stay tuned!

Crazy Socks and Jump Rope for Heart!

Today was quite the day!  We were very busy learning about new things!  Here is a review:

1.  We read Rhoda's Rock Hunt in Library with a guest teacher, Mr. Duberstien.  It was a super neat book set right here in Minnesota!  It is another Star of the North nominee.

2.  We designed our very own CrAzY SoCkS!  We designed the socks and shoes!  Look for them in our hallway the next time you visit.

3.  We had Jump Rope for Heart!  It was so much fun!  The sixth graders joined us and we jump, jump, jumped!  Some kids had their name drawn for a prize.

4.  We ended the day with a Popcorn Party for reading the most minutes during February in our wing.  We also watched a video about the subnivean.

The Cat in the Hat

We have been taking time to look at the writings and life of Dr. Seuss.  His birthday is March 2nd, so to honor him we did a quick writing project answering the question: Would you like for the Cat in the Hat to come over to your house to play on a rainy day?

It was so fun to imagine and create an answer to the question.  Our class was pretty evenly divided between Yes and No, but the reasonings were very different.  We also did a directed drawing of the Cat in the Hat.

Ask your child how he/she answered the question.

Buddy Reading!

Friday was such a busy day, it deserves two posts!

Friday afternoon we had a Reading Party with our buddies!  Our fifth grade buddies picked out books to read to us.  Our buddies read to us or we read to our buddies.  All of these kids really love to READ!  It was a fun way to end the busy day!  Ms. Hudella even had a treat for us!
