So Far This Week . . .

This week has been so busy with all the learning we are doing in Second Grade!

Monday we had our first indoor recess!  We got to use blocks and play games.  Other students wanted to draw and color.  It was a good chance to practice what we do during indoor recess.

Wednesday we talked about what to do when we feel like we want to blurt out and interrupt.  We read the book My Mouth is a Volcano.  We first talked about volcanoes and found out we know lots about them!  Next, we talked about what happens if you  shake a bottle of pop - it explodes!  Then we read the book - see if your child can tell you about what happened.  We came up with things we can do when we are feeling like we want to interrupt but know we shouldn't.

Today we did our first partner reading.  It was lots of fun to share our book Asha in the Attic with our desk partner.  Some kids got to use the big book or the book on the Smart board.

We had Library today!  Ms. Zbacnik talked to us about the author and illustrator who are coming to Brimhall in October.  We are so lucky.  We read the book When's my Birthday? by Julie Fogliano Illustrations by Christian Robinson.  Ask your child about the book.

A Week in Review

Here is a brief rundown of our week!

We worked on our Morning Meeting this week.  We really firmed up how we do various aspects.  We learned a new greeting and game.  Ask your child about the game - it was a HUGE hit!

We also worked on our Hopes and Dreams for 2nd grade.  We have the final copies hanging in our classroom.

We learned about a few activities we will do during Guided Reading Workshop time.  We are working on practicing these things so that they are automatic.

We learned about Bus Safety too this week!  We learned about waiting for the bus, getting on the bus, riding the bus, getting off the bus and the Danger Zone.

We started Literacy and learned about our families, stories and traditions.  We learned about making connections and using our schema.

Yesterday we had a great recess break in the morning that involved playing and snack.  It was awesome!  We also had library!  We checked out books!

Today was the icing on the cake!  We had our first assembly!  It was so much fun!  We learned about all the staff members of our school, met BLAZE our mascot, took a pledge to show Brimhall Pride and watched the teachers be a part of a game show all about positive behavior.  It was the best way to start our day!

We ended our day writing in our Symbol and Landmark books about the flag of the United States.  Everyone did a great job!

Library in 2nd Grade

Last Thursday we had our first visit to the Library at Brimhall.  Ms. Zbacnik and Mrs. McNulty helped us learn about how the library works and how we enter and leave the library.  

We will check out books in the coming weeks.  Our library day will be on Thursday, unless we do not have school on a Thursday or we are out of the building on a field trip.  I will let you know if there is a change.

In the mean time, please help your child find a specific spot to keep library books.  Please be sure the books are stored in a safe and dry location.

  

Today we . . .

Today we had another really good day!

Here are a few fun things we did!

1.  Learned more about each other!  We did an activity all about our friends in our class.  We found friends who did, had or liked certain things.  For example, find a friend who plays an instrument. Or find a friend who is wearing the same color as you.  It was lots of fun and got us to learn more about each other.

2.  We also spent time exploring our math journal.  This is something we will use everyday.  It has parts we will complete in class and outside of class as homework.  We will formally start math Monday.  Be looking for homework each night.

3.  At the end of the day we took pictures on the playground.  We will put these outside our classroom door for the entire year!  They will go home with students at the end of the year.

First Day of Second Grade!

What a fun day we had!  We did many things, here are a few highlights!  Ask your child about their day.  We did a sheet at the end of the day to help them think of four things they liked about their day.  I hope to see everyone tomorrow!
