Tuesday Mrs. Erickson taught us about Main Idea and Theme. We talked about how they are different. Main Idea is what they story is mostly about, a short summary and includes what happened.
She introduced us to the Main Idea bags! She has all of these bags with various objects in them. All of the objects had a main idea or purpose. Ask your child about his/her bag and what the group decide.
We have been working on finding the theme in fiction and main idea in nonfiction. Today we read Mr. Tiger Goes Wild by Peter Brown and practiced finding theme. First, we identified the big topic or idea. Then, we looked for examples of what they character did to show the big idea or topic. Last we created a message for the book.

This week we finished the last book in the Tales of Deckawoo Drive series. In the book, there is an encyclopedia. We had a conversation about what an encyclopedia is, where you would find one and how you might use it. I have an old set of Children's Encyclopedias in our room. The kids love reading them!
We have also been talking about being a "bucket filler" at school and at home. Here is a link to the book that we read. Ask your child about how he/she plan to fill someone's bucket!
Today was a great day of learning! We did two special things!
1. Mrs. Erickson shared a special book with us called After the Fall How Humpty Dumpty Got Back Up Again. We started talking about character traits and how we find character traits as we are learning about a character. Ask you your child about the book!
2. We continued learning about three digit addition. We had math conferences with a learning partner. We solved a few problems then talked about how we did it with a buddy!
This week with all of the extremely cold weather we have had three days of indoor recess. Here are a few pictures of what kids do! Some kids were making a long train of unifix cubes the go all around the classroom! It was a great example of working together. Ask your child what he/she did during indoor recess.
This week during writing we worked on making resolutions for the new year.
A resolution is a promise you make to yourself. In the promise you will work to help others or make yourself a better person.
Together we made a list of possible resolutions! There were many good ideas! Then we made a plan of how we were accomplish our goal and wrote a paragraph describing our plan. Next week be watching for the resolutions to come home.
Each year the sixth grade students present "Famous Faces." This is the culmination of a research project. Each student picks a person to research, write a 1-2 minute presentation about that person, dress like that person and present their research.
We had 6, 6th grade students come to our room to present to us this morning. Ask your child about who he/she learned about today! Well done 6th graders!
Thursday at Library, Ms. Zbacnik read us another nominee for the Star of the North Book Award. It had a bit a a surprise ending. Ask your child about it!
