Tuesday

This week in honor of the birthday of Dr. Seuss we are reading some of his books.  We enjoyed the simple story and rhyming words in these to books so far this week.

We also have been wrapping up our paragraph writing for our research project.  The paragraphs looks great and our next step is creating our illustrations for the hallway display. 

It was a fun day to play outside with the new snow.  Our clothes were very wet as we came in!

Cozy Clothes, Reading Party and Beekle!

Today was a big day!  We had so many fun things going on.  First, it was Cozy Clothes day at school.  We all agreed it was so nice to be comfy and cozy at school on this cold day.

We had a fairly normal day with reading groups, literacy and an amazing math lesson about capacity.  We looked at cups, pints, quarts and gallons.  Ask your child about the diagram we made to help us remember the cups in a pint, quarts in a gallon etc.

We went to Phy. Ed. and then it was time for our Reading Party!  We had a delicious snack of popcorn and apple juice.  It really hit the spot.

We watched books on Bookflix.  We enjoyed Diary of a Worm and Diary of a Spider.

Next, we had some reading time.  We brought books from home and we had some special books.  We read some Caldecott books, math books and books by Steve Jenkins.  

Last, we made Beekle creatures.  After recess, we read The Adventures of Beekle:  The Unimaginary Friend.  It is the Caldecott winner for 2015.  At our reading party we made Beekle out of marshmallows, toothpicks and paper for a crown.  It was lots of fun!

Research to Report

Today we started the process of taking our research notes about extreme weather and turning them into paragraphs.  Each group did a fabulous job taking notes.  It is a bit hard to turn notes into sentences, but with a little practice we can do it.  Next week we will write our final copies, illustrate our weather topic and create ourselves as meteorologists. 

Math Fun!

In math today we did many things.  One was to talk about capacity and volume.  I asked the kids to predict which yellow cup would hold more.  Most of them thought the short, stout cup would hold more.  It was a bit of a trick question as we discovered. 

We reviewed perimeter before talking and working on area.  We found objects in our classroom to trace onto grid paper.  We then counted the area of the shapes. 

Picture Book Switch

Today the Second grade participated in the Picture Book Switch!  Each Second grade teacher read us a favorite book of theirs or their class.

We loved having the other teachers read to us.  It was a special way to end the day!

Fourth Grade Concert

Today was the Fourth Grade Concert.  It was so fun to see kids we know and siblings perform.  They did a really nice job.  A student in our class was a special guest performer in the concert.  She and her sister sang at the beginning of the last song.  We were all very proud of her!  Good Luck tonight!

Research

Today we continued our Weather Research project with Ms. Zbacnik in the library.  We all had our own note taking sheets and with a partner used Pebble Go to research our own topic.  We were very excited to learn more about our topic.  Ask your child what type of extreme weather they area researching.

It was hard work reading the information, putting it into our own words and writing it on out note taking paper.
